Just got my 1st stik kit on Friday afternoon & was pouring within an hour thanks to weeks of reading the forum. As with most newbies I'm sure, I botched the first pour due to inexperience with the heat. After the second pour I think I have the hang of it and have produced several nice pours since.

Question for Del: I bought a 4 cavity (5-1/4) and a 10 cavity (5-1/4) and I was having trouble pouring the 4 cavity until I really concentrated on hitting the center of the hole. After clean-up I noticed that the 4 cavity mold has a smaller opening at the very top of the worm where the plastic enters. The opening is just over a 1/4", but probably at least .062 smaller in diameter than the 10 cavity entry hole, just over 5/16". If I concentrate and pour at the plastic at it's hottest, the small hole is a none issue but I'm wondering if I should try to open the 4 holes up a little? Is this normal for the two different molds? Is the 10 cavity designed for better production speed with larger hole?

Some different things that I use include; a heat gun ($9 at Harbor Freight) to Pre-Heat the molds and work surface. I use two pieces of Micarta sheet to pour and work on and also to lay the finished worms on to cool. The Micarta is very resistant to heat and the finish is so polished that virtually no plastic will adhere to it. Any overflow or drops of plastic can be easily balled up and placed in the cup for re-melt as opposed to being thrown away.

1-1/2 cups of plastic melted thus far has yielded 40 worms and I still have about a 1/4 cup of remelt left. Does this sound normal?

Thanks for all your help!

Thats a good question, they should be really close if not the same, Yes you can open them up.
I use the same drawing file for the 4 cav and the 7 and the 10 cavity. did you purchace them at the same tme or is the 4 cav an older one.

depedning on how much you over poured the biats will depend on how much reheat stuff you have left. I know guys that have 0 left over, they dont even have to cut the ends off, they pour it right to the edge of the bait. I on the other hand don't have the patience and I over fill them LOL.

post some pics so we can see the bats you poured.

Del,
For what it is worth. I have a an older version of the 4 cavity stick mold that the sprue is straight but smaller and the head seems to be a bit smaller than the other two stick molds I have that have larger sprue on it.

They both pour fine I just have to have my plastic good and hot for the one with the smaller sprue. What could I use to make the sprue larger and the hole without wrecking the mold?

I have had 2 types one with a chamfer right out fo the bait. one with a small bowl then chamfer right out of the bait. one time I think I adjusted the bowl to drop down and used a different sized tool this opened the front nose just a tad.

you could clamp the mold with a c clamp then get a angle burr tool and open it up a tad. unless you have access to a drill press then just run a 1/2 drill to the head of the bait at a slow speed.

does yours have a 3/8s dia bowl or a 1/2 dia bowl?

I'm thinking it is a 3/8 diameter. I can bring it to work and have our tooling guy open it up to a 1/2 though. Thanks for the tip.

Here are a few pics of my initial pours. I am trying to duplicate Yamamoto colors 021 (Black/Blue flake) & 213 (Purple/emerald flake). I'm happy with the colors and texture. Incidentally I do get a small dent in about 25% of the sticks. I have read about this in advance and was expecting it. I really don't see any issue with the dent and I'm not selling the baits either.

I dropped one in a laundry tub full of water to compare with OEM Stik and the sink rate was very close. Your stik actually showed slightly more action in the wiggle so perhaps I'm pouring too soft. Can't fish em yet in Pittsburgh!

Thanks for the info on the 4 cavity hole. I will try to open it a tad with a countersink bit.

Thanks again for your help.
