Tube molds are very simple to pour.
A few things that will make it easier are:
Have plastic as hot as possible
Pour slowly on one side of the mold.
If you are having a problem with air gaps in the mold, you might want to heat the mold in the oven to about 150º on a flat cooking rack, NO OPEN FLAME (this will damage the mold)

Are you cutting the "tail" with a razor blade?

Some people cut them with sissors and razor blades.

the fastest and best way I have been told is those round fabric cutter blades.

Heres a quick way to make one.

you will need a small paint roller( those small ones)
a bunch of round fabric cutters ( can be bought at wall mart)
a few washers

Put a blade on the rollor than a washer then a blade etc. from what I am told most epople use about 10 blades with one washer in between.
The blades and washers are put on the part where the paint roller would go.

Doc made one at ne time and was going to send the pics.( I think it was docirv).
Maybe I can con him out of them someday soon ;)

I personally dont fish tubes that much in az so I cut the ones I make with sissors

Delw,

Not sure if these pictures will work, but here's one of the cutters I use to cut my tubes.

Up here in Canada we have 2 sizes of blades. The ones in the picture are about the size of a quarter. (2 for $5) I want to make a bigger cutter with the other blades which are a little bigger in diameter. ($5 each) so this cutter can get pretty pricey. As for my handles on the cutter my fishing partner is also a machinist so he makes me all these little parts that I need. You can get away without the handle but it makes it easier to push down on when your cutting 100's of tubes at a time. All I have to do is supply him with products that I make while we're fishing tournaments. We're trying to make a new cutter similar to a tile cutter I'll try and get some pics this week end. It's almost finished.

Hey Taylor,

That pic is a bit hard for me to see. How does it work? If I go to Wallyworld, do I just ask them for a pata cutter? What the heck is a pata cutter suppose to do?

Is this a non-motorized pasta cutter? It looks like the best option so far!
Razor blades are too time consuming and uneven and I've thought about using a sharp pizza cutter, but I don't think there is such a thing. Maybe a dicer with multi-parallel blades! hmmm ....

Del, the slimmer, smooth tubes don't do much for me. It wasn't until a double dipped my old tube that I started getting bass regularly. Once I purchase your tube mold, I'll be dipping the tube in salted plastic anyway. I have also thought about molding a fat tube shape.

Del have you ever put a dump groove or a tear trim land in the mold to thin out the flash to make it easy to trim? Don't know if these materials will work like that or not just thinking about my use of LSR.

Greg.

Most guys dont get over pours when pouring with alum molds., it takes some practice.
They dont over pour like the plastic molds.

Frank
we make the straight tubes and even 2 and 3 dipped style molds( tapered ones)
only ones I have online are the straight, tube molds are not a big seller lots of people still like to dip them.
once things settl down I will put some tapered ones online.

What do any of you suppose large lure MFG use to cut tubes???

All these options look difficult - I can only imagine cutting them by hand to be time consuming and imperfect.

What is ment by dipping the tubes?? Redipping them in plastic after they've been made??

Delw

Dipping the tubes for example, is basically taking a pencil (any piece of metal or small rod) dripping it in hot plastic a few times to build up the tube.

no molds are used,
that being said we have some customers that have taken the tube mold poured pure white or red then after the cooled they dipped them in a green or brown.
this will give you a 2 or even three color tapered tube.

If you use a pencil, will it take the heat of the plastic? and is it difficult to remove the tube from it?

Delw

sure it would I have dine it in the past. let them cool off and peel them off.

Del,

Do you have a good plastic formula for tubes.

I've got your soft plastic and hardener.

Also, what type of container do you use to dip your own tubes. This is where I'm having a problem. Should I dip them horizontal or vertical?

Delw

Ive used coke cans as they are small in dia and tall

the other thing to use is a arizona Ice tea can. they are about 2 times as tall as a coke can same dia.

I don't do tubes that much at all and havent for a while. now I just pour them.

as far as plastic the tube plastic is perfect.
April might know how much hardener to add to it, I will ask her later today.
