Semi rookie pourer here needing some advice. When pouring with salt, the last 1/3 of the cup gets really heavy with salt regardless of how much stirring I do prior. The receipe used is 1 cup plastic, 1/2 cup salt and 1/4 cup softner. I first cook the plastic and softner, slowly add salt while stirring and then add colorants. During the pour I stir between each cavity for good mixture. By the last 1/3 of the pyrex, the salt content is so dense that it won't pour right. I end up wasting plastic and salt (un-useable unless I add fresh plastic, but still have waste toward the end). Any tips to cut my waste would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Are you using Del's Salt? I always have the last senko or two with a lot of salt. But obviously that's not 1/3 cup. I just add some extra plastic like you do if I really need a few more. Otherwise, I save it till my next pour and mix it in with hot plastic. Seems to work just fine.

salt naturally will settle to the bottom of your plastic if you are having that much salt at the bottom of your cup i would guess you are not mixing enough in between pours. when im pouring my sticks I stop and stir after every 2 sticks poured. give this a shot I think this will help with your problem.

Thats the problem with hand pouring and salt it settles. which is also the reason why I have so much salt in that basic formula.

when I did that formula I would stir between every 2 pours , while this will leave settling on the bottom it will be enough salt to keep the sticks the same sink rate.

you can drop that extra salt in the next batch of pours.

with a pot and mixer you can add 1/2 the amount of salt and get the same effect.

then the plastic is too hot and the salt is settling faster due to the plastic being thinner and not suspending the salt as much.

Is your salt floured? that will help with suspension but the trade off is color changes to opaque.

Thanks guys for your speedy responses to my prob. All supplies used for the pour are from Del's (using salt as it came). As mentioned earlier I do stir well between each pour (cavity). Del, I think you nabbed it...logically if the plastic is too hot it will sink faster in my cup. I may have to find that sweet temp as if the plastic is too cool it clumps the pour.

I also like the other tip of mixing the leftovers with new batches..like the sprues. Don't know why I didn't think of that! Thanks again for the tips!

one other thing that salt is a finer salt. when we all first came up with that formula back in the tacklemaking.com days ( way before TU) we all used table salt, as thats what we could get our hands on at teh time ( we being everyone who poured).
so being a finer salt I think you can back off about a 1/4 maybe even 1/2?

another thing to try is no salt in your plastic. now this is a dumb idea for weightless worms (like wacky rigging or weightless texas rigging). However, if you did this carolina style or shaky head style, no salt required, but it does burn through plastic a LOT faster. just another tip. could even use it for jig trailers.

You may be able to make the salt a little finer by putting it in a blender. Smaller particles dont sink as much. Also like Del said, you should let the plastic thicken slightly to help suspend salt and glitter. I swirl my pan as opposed to stirring so I dont have to switch hands... I cant stir or pour left handed lol
